Job Description

CAPE is a charitable organization that works to better human health by protecting the planet. We seek to better understand how the environment affects human health and communicate this information to our membership, the general public, and policymakers in government in order to create change.

We support and guide physicians and other health workers to advocate for healthier environments and ecosystems.

In response to a call from our community to provide advocacy training to enable a more skilled approach to making change, CAPE is launching a training and mobilization program for physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. The program will provide advocacy training and year-round cohort-based support for participants, as well as work to develop a database of key go-to information on issues at the intersection of health and environment. While initial design of the program has been undertaken, the program will be substantially shaped by the vision of the Program Director.

With the understanding that Indigenous people and people made vulnerable in societal hierarchies are often at most risk from exposure to toxics and the repercussions of the climate crisis, we would like to ensure that this program proves useful for Indigenous physicians and health workers and members of other marginalized groups. We ask that applicants consider their positionalities and experiences while letting us know why you feel you are well-suited to take on this role.

We anticipate hiring an additional part-time person to support this work; the Program Director will be involved in this hiring.

In this role, the successful candidate will:
-Evaluate the advocacy training needs and interests of the CAPE community (physicians, nurses, other health workers)
-Recruit a diverse group of health workers to participate in the program
-Organize an annual training conference and lobby day (virtual or in person in Ottawa)
-Provide year-round support for program participants through a cohort model based on identity/location/issue area, etc. depending on the suite of applicants
-With other members of the CAPE team, engage in fundraising as needed to ensure the program is fully funded
-Coordinate the development of resources for the program, including a research database, webinars/presentations, advocacy and action materials, etc. and a forum where participants can connect and provide each other with resources and feedback
-Coordinate the development of a participant-focused web space
-Supervise the Program Coordinator (part-time position)
-Connect with other members of the CAPE team and CAPE’s regional committees to identify opportunities to mobilize program participants for regional or national campaigns
-Provide support and advice to CAPE’s regional committees
-Engage with evaluation experts at the beginning and end of an initial three-year program cycle to engage in formative and summative evaluation processes
Engage in organizational support as needed in the context of CAPE’s small staff team

The successful candidate will ideally have:
-Experience developing and implementing advocacy training programs
-Knowledge of health, climate change, toxics, and/or related lived experience
-Understanding of Indigenous worldviews and the concerns of Indigenous people or racialized or other communities made vulnerable in current societal hierarchies
-Excellent organizational skills; ability to successfully manage many simultaneous tasks
-Excellent communication skills
-Experience supervising staff and contractors
-Familiarity with NationBuilder, WordPress, or other similar systems
-Written and spoken fluency in English is required; written and spoken fluency in –French is a strong asset
-Enthusiasm for working on a small, highly collaborative team

In order to apply, please submit a cover letter and resume in English to [email protected].

As an organization working at the intersection of health and environment, CAPE understands the importance of diverse perspectives to ensure a healthy future for all. We understand that those most impacted by climate change and environmental hazards are Indigenous and people of colour. We offer a flexible workplace and are able to accommodate various schedules and commitments.
