DEPARTMENT: Engineering Operations
STATUS: Regular Full Time
NO. OF POSITIONS: Two
UNION: CUPE, Local 387
HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week*
SALARY: $46.58 per hour plus benefits/
Apprenticeship rates as applicable

As a skilled Tradesperson 2 Mechanic, you will work with our team of experienced mechanics to perform mechanical overhaul, repair, servicing and maintenance work on a variety of City vehicles, heavy-duty equipment and other equipment as required. In addition, you will also perform gas and electrical welding tasks common to mechanical shop work.

Requirements:
• Completion of a recognized mechanic trade apprenticeship and Inter-provincial Trades Qualification as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Commercial Transport Mechanic or Automotive Service Technician and related experience. Bonus if you have related municipal experience in heavy duty mechanics, electrical diagnosis and working with Fire apparatus and Police vehicles!
• Sponsorship of a 3rd or 4th year mechanic apprentice may be considered and will follow the apprenticeship wage structure per the CUPE Local 387 Collective Agreement.
• A valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement is preferred, however, qualified candidates who do not possess a Class 3 Driver’s License at the time of application are still encouraged to apply. Please note: the successful candidate will be required to obtain the Class 3 Driver’s License within the 6 month probationary period.
• Motor Vehicle Inspection with Air is preferred, however, qualified candidates working towards this designation are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates will be required to obtain this designation within the probationary period.
• Valid Pressure Fuel certificates are assets.
• Thorough knowledge of the standards, practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the automotive and heavy-duty mechanical trade.
• Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions related to the work performed.
• You have the ability to perform a variety of complex, skilled mechanical and related tasks in the overhaul, repair, maintenance, and adjustment of a wide variety of automotive, small and heavy duty equipment and vehicles with minimal supervision.
• You have the ability to establish and maintain superior working relationships with coworkers, suppliers and customers, and to provide excellent customer service.
• The ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions, interpret and work from schematics, manufacturer’s instructions, diagrams and sketches, and to maintain a variety of records.
• You have the ability to operate a variety of vehicles and equipment and skill in the use and care of tools and equipment used in the trade.
• Must successfully pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check

*Schedule is 2 weeks of day shifts (7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) followed by 2 weeks of evening shifts (12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.). This position also participates in a Compressed Work Week Program.
